The highest golf course in North America at 10,152 feet altitude is outside the historic silver mining town of Leadville. The fairways were carved out of pine forests. The rustic driving range is along the headwaters of the Arkansas River.
The nine hole Collegiate Peaks Golf Course fairways are level at an elevation of 8,500 feet, The towering peaks immediately behind quickly climb to more than 14,000 feet.
Stay overnight in Salida at an affordable motel near the large city-owned Salida Hot Springs Pool. The river runs through downtown and the city park offering rafting and tubing. Play the relaxing course before driving on.
The Jim Engh designed course is west of town. Starting from a high ridge, fairways flow throughout the ravines and pinon pine landscape.
Designed by Gary Player, the hidden 18-hole, semi-private course is part of extensive recreational facilities serving a federal workers community perched above Florence.
The very long course is in the large planned community adjacent to the massive Pueblo Reservoir created by the Arkansas River.
